  21. Assuming your 'voice over data' means 'digital voice over data' :

  23. the original DSVD works between the ORIG and ANS sides. In case of you and your
  24. IP, this setup would end up at IP site (where nobody is interested in talking
  25. to end users) WITHOUT going through internet to the remote end user (in Telnet
  26. session for simplicity).

  28. the future DSVD (data and voice packets together) will pass through the 
  29. intermediate sites (1 modem facing you and 1 modem facing the remote user at 
  30. their respective IP sites) and the voice-carrying DSVD packets will be 
  31. demultiplexed from the stream by the remote user's modem. This way, you'll be 
  32. able to make calls via Internet.

  34. with analog SVD, the voice info rides on top of data point constellation as a 
  35. second vector (like superimposed noise) and gets demodulated by the local IP.
  36. since from that point on the network is digital, it falls apart unless the IP
  37. find some way of sending the voice info via 2nd route along with data up to the
  38. end port facing the remote caller, provided that port is analog. If digital,
  39. no means are available to send 2 logical channels unless that port and remote
  40. user are both on DSVD.
